This procedure estimates the maximum flow rate that one MCFM XLP filter can handle given a representative sample of the fluid to be filtered. It is based on cleaning the screen continuously, which results in one cleaning per 6 seconds.
Overview
To perform the filterability test on an XLP MCFM filter, you must take a known amount of sampled water and filter it through a 2-inch diameter square mesh screen. The sampled water should be representative of the worst possible scenario your filter will face. Then, the 2-inch diameter square mesh screen must also be identical to the type of material used in the full-scale filter.
The volume in ml collected in this manner gives a rough estimate of the flow capacity of the MCFM filter in USGPM. For example, if 600 ml has passed through, it can be assumed that the MCFM can handle approximately 600 USGPM.
Required Equipments
- A mini-filter is constructed which consists of a 2” diameter screen media (as above) that is hot melted to a PVC , 2” dia socket fitting.
- One of either a graduated cylinder 1000 mL or a container having an approximate volume of 1 Litre.
Procedure
Method 1 – with a graduated Cylinder
Place the mini-filter into the top opening of the Graduated Cylinder. Pour the sample water through the mini-filter until water backs up in the mini-filter – indicating that the filter media is blocked. Note the volume of water collected, in mL, prior to blocking the mini-filter.
Method 2 – With 1 Litre Container
